How Na Pali boat tours work

The Na Pali Coast has no road. From the water you see the folded cliffs, sea caves and valleys that you cannot reach by car. Most boat tours leave from the west side of Kauai, run for 5 to 6.5 hours and combine sightseeing with snorkeling when the sea allows it.

There are two main boat types. A catamaran is larger and steadier. A raft is smaller, faster and bumpier, and it can get closer to the cliffs and caves. Everything depends on the sea. The winter months from October to April bring rougher water, and operators say that cave entry becomes unlikely then.

Landings (October 2026): A DLNR notice of 19 October 2026 lists the remaining state parks on Kauai as closed after the storms, while some operators still advertise trips with a beach landing at Nuʻalolo Kai. Ask the operator whether the landing runs on your date, and check the latest DLNR notices before you go.

Catamaran or raft

The boat decides how the day feels.

Catamaran

The Lucky Lady is sold as a year-round snorkel day trip with breakfast snacks and lunch, depending on the product. It suits families with younger children, since the age limit starts at 3. Sea conditions can still stop the snorkeling.

Raft

Rafts bounce more, and they have no onboard toilet or shade. One operator does not take guests under 6 on its raft, and it excludes pregnant guests and guests with certain existing injuries. Its morning cave and snorkel raft runs all year, but cave entry, snorkeling and landing depend on conditions.

Beach landing

The landing raft stops at Nuʻalolo Kai with a special permit. It runs from May to October and only in suitable weather. The listing shows an adult price of $255 and an age limit of 7 years.

Harbors and parking

Two harbors on the west side serve the tours above.

ʻEleʻele and Port Allen

Kauai Sea Tours starts here. The beach-landing raft checks in at 6:30 a.m., so plan an early drive from the east side.

Kīkīaola Small Boat Harbor

Na Pali Experience starts at this harbor in Kekaha, west of Waimea. Do not confuse it with Port Allen. The operator names parking at $20 per car in a privately run gravel lot.

Getting there

The Kaumualiʻi Highway reaches the west side from Līhuʻe, and one-lane bridges on Kauai roads take turns. See the Kauai airport guide for the drive from Līhuʻe.

Rules for landings and wildlife

The park and marine rules apply to every boat.

Commercial boat transfers that drop guests at Kalalau or Miloliʻi are illegal. Motorized, licensed rafts may generally approach Nuʻalolo Kai. Private or rented kayaks may not land there. Sea kayaking in the park is allowed only from 15 May to 7 September, and a Kalalau landing needs a camping permit.

NOAA asks you to keep at least 10 feet (3 m) from green sea turtles. Hawaiian monk seals need 50 feet (15 m), and a mother with a pup 150 feet (about 45 m). Spinner dolphins are protected within 50 yards (46 m), and humpback whales within 100 yards (91 m). Do not touch, chase or feed any animal. A boat tour cannot promise dolphins, whales or a cave visit.

What to check before you book

These points decide whether the trip fits.

Season

Summer is calmer. The sea is rougher from October to April, and the operator may skip caves and landings. Look at the weather page before you pick a month.

What is included

Food and drinks differ by product. The Lucky Lady lists breakfast snacks, lunch and drinks according to the product page. Confirm snorkel gear and any extras.

Cancellation by weather

Trips run when conditions allow. Ask what happens to your payment if the operator cancels. One operator runs every day except 25 December.

Sea sickness

Rafts are bumpier than catamarans. If you are prone to sea sickness, a catamaran is the safer choice. Ask the crew about the sea before you board.

Na Pali boat tours: frequently asked questions

How much is a Na Pali boat tour?

The examples above cost $215 to $255 for adults in 2026. That is not a market range, and tax, reservation fees and tips may come on top. The Lucky Lady charges $195 for ages 3 to 12.

How long does the tour take?

The catamaran day trip takes 5 to 5.5 hours. The beach-landing raft takes 6.5 hours, with check-in at 6:30 a.m.

Is a catamaran or a raft better?

A catamaran is steadier and takes children from 3 years. A raft is faster and bumpier, with no toilet or shade, and it can go closer to caves when the sea allows it.

Will I get to snorkel?

Not on every day. Sea conditions can prevent snorkeling, and caves and landings depend on the sea as well. The operator decides on the day.

Can I do a Na Pali tour in winter?

Some trips run all year, such as the Lucky Lady and a morning raft. The sea is rougher from October to April, so cave entry is unlikely and the schedule can change.

Is there a sunset cruise?

The tours in the table are day trips. For an evening departure, check the operator page for time, length and price.
